HONG KONG 2011

Welcome to Hong Kong!

Upon arriving in Hong Kong we were surprised by just how humid it was. We definitely weren't expecting it to be as sweaty as it was. Before we departed the UK for Hong Kong we had pre-booked a tour through Viator.com. We've used them many times before for different trips. They are very useful for booking tours with when you know you won't have time to book on a tour in country.

Lantau Island

The tour we had booked on was on a day trip to see Lantau Island and the Giant Buddha. The day after we had arrived we departed on our full day tour. We started with a ferry to Lantau Island. This was followed by a short stop at a secluded beach before we continued onto the Tai O fishing village. This fishing village is built on the water and as such all the houses are on stilts in the south china sea. The locals transport is via boat. We also saw many types of catch here from shark fins, the pointless Chinese delicacy which needlessly endangers sharks, to puffer fish. After this we proceeded onto the Giant Buddha. This was by far the largest sitting Buddha that we had ever seen. Next we proceeded through the procession of statues to the Po Lin Monastery where we had a vegetarian lunch. As you may expect this thrilled Kat. After lunch we caught a cable car journey back to mainland Hong Kong. That evening we enjoyed some bizarrely presented cocktails and random local food before having an early night.

Hong Kong

The next day we went up the steepest tram in the world to Victoria Peak. It was even more humid today making the breeze at the top even more rewarding. Next we travelled to Stanley Market to pick up souvenirs and bits and pieces. We grabbed a can of Apple Tango here and it was one of the most refreshing drinks I've ever had because of all the humidity and sweating. We then proceeded to the Avenue of the Stars via the Old Jade Markets. That evening we stayed on the other side of the island for diner and then headed back to the harbour in order to watch the symphony of lights which in fairness was the best light show I have ever seen even though it is not normally our thing. Hong Kong is very picturesque at night as it is densely populated and has many high rise buildings which are well lit.

The next day we departed on a Dragon Air flight to Borneo.
