In order to get into Slovenia we had had to cross from Bosnia into Croatia and then into
Slovenia from Croatia. The border from Bosnia to Croatia was woefully inadequate with only
one lane and roughly an hour of delays to us getting through. Once back in Croatia we were
confronted by all the traffic problems most of Europe has. The border with Slovenia was no
different and despite being one of the largest we had been through was one of the slowest to
pass. Thankfully once in Slovenia it didn’t take us long to get to Lake Bled.
We only had one night in Lake Bled and due to traffic issues we had got in later than we had expected.
As a result we went straight out and as it turned out we were really lucky. We had perfect weather got
to overlook the lake from the castle vantage point for free and managed to enjoy a couple of beers in
the perfect setting before just squeezing into a really nice restaurant for diner and wine.
Our welcome to Slovenia had been stunning.
The next morning we headed to the Skocjan Caves. As it turned out we had just perfectly timed it with the first tour of the morning. We usually aren’t a fan of guided tours but we knew we had to in order to see the caves properly. I’ve been in several caves in my life, but this was something else. The cave contained a huge canyon, waterfalls, a river, lake and enormous stalactites and stalagmites. Definitely worth the visit over the cave with the train in it.
From here we headed back into Croatia for the third time in order to visit it properly on route back towards the airport and our flight home.
