KOSOVO 2017

Welcome to Kosovo!

At the border crossing we were accused of being journalists. I don’t think many western Europeans; especially British come into Kosovo or use this border. Thankfully after a bit of interrogation we ended up being allowed out of Montenegro and into Kosovo. The border itself is built on a remote mountain pass up and down mountain roads. The views from the road where fantastic, but we didn’t have a lot of time to stop as it was getting late and dark.

Peja is Kosovo’s number one tourist destination. It has a lot to be said about it. There appears to be one hotel, one tourist road to drive and a couple of other ruins in the area. The city itself is fairly busy and not that nice.

Because it was late and there were limited dining options that we had seen on our way in we decided to eat at the hotel. We ended up having some Kosovan cuisine and tried some deserts. Kat got profiteroles and I got what I thought was chocolate cake. Both turned out not as we had expected and Kat couldn’t even finish hers. Much to my amusement. I ended up sampling some local beer and Kat tried Kosovan wine. Both of which we would recommend.

The next morning we drove up and back down one of the world’s most dangerous roads following a gorge through blind chicanes and cliff overhangs while always dodging pot holes. This had been a key site in the war between Kosovo and Serbia and had strong military outposts still a very present site.

From here we were headed to Bulgaria. Unfortunately our car rental wouldn’t allow us through Macedonia. Kind of expected as I had read there was ongoing fighting especially around one of the northern cities where we would have needed to traverse. Since the border between Kosovo and Serbia is a no go we had to head back into Montenegro before crossing into Serbia, proceed to travel several hours across Serbia before finally entering into Bulgaria.
