When we arrived in Langkawi we were surprised by just how little there actually was here and the cheapness of the alcohol in a majority Muslim country. I guess the low cost of alcohol goes so far as to explaining the rubbish-ness of the entire place for a backpacker. We had to walk over 15 minutes just to find somewhere open for breakfast. Granted we were here in a low period, but Australians are supposed to come here year round. This on top of the fact that there was no shade on the beaches and the fact that you can't swim in the sea for half of the year due to hundreds of types of deadly jellyfish which just happened to coincide with when we were here meant that we actually spent relatively little time on the beach on a beach island. We couldn't wait to get out of Langkawi and ended up leaving a day earlier on a ferry to Penang in the hope that Penang or Kuala Lumpur would be a better part of Malaysia.
Next we arrived in Penang, another Malaysian Island just a short hop from mainland Malaysia. Penang was a welcome change from Langkawi as it had a soul and vibe. We stayed just on the edge of little India here and welcomed the sounds and smells of bollywood and awesome curries again. While in Penang we went to see the Kek Loc Si temple and the many pagodas here and Penang Hill where we stopped for a drink at "David Brown's" restaurant. From here we caught the free ferry to Butterworth on the mainland before catching a train to Kuala Lumpur were we saw some awesome scenery and where the only foreigners to brave the coach class and not take the executive.
Next we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. We spent most of our time here relaxing, shopping and getting ready for our upcoming trip to the Philippines. We did however manage to squeeze in viewing the Petronas twin towers and a trip out of town to the Batu Caves. Next we left on a flight to Singapore.
Next we left on a flight to the Philippines and onto country number 10!
